How to get organized with multiple chrome profiles.
This is a recent thing that I started doing in order to separate the different parts of my life. As a masters student and a business owner, I have loads of things I have to focus on. Honestly the thought started when I had way too many bookmarks for my own good. I started losing things and forgetting what went where. I already separate my life in reality by my student self vs. business self vs. personal self, so why not create a workflow that makes sense?
It was also so annoying to switch between Gmail accounts constantly and the wrong Google Drive opening when I needed a different one, or access being denied because the wrong account opened. Having everything separated has been a whole lot smoother. Let’s get into how to create this for yourself.
Download all of your data and bookmarks from your current Chrome profile.
Launch Google Chrome.
Click on the three dot icon in the upper right hand corner.
From the drop-down menu, hover over Bookmarks and Lists.
Click Bookmark Manager.
Within the bookmark manager, there is another three-dot icon at the upper right hand corner of the page.
Select Export Bookmarks from the dropdown menu.
Choose a save location for your HTML file, click Save.
Create separate Chrome profiles for each of your accounts.
On your computer, open Chrome.
At the top right corner, click on your profile picture or the little person icon.
A drop down menu will open.
Click Add at the bottom.
Sign in with your desired Google Account.
Choose a name, photo and color scheme.
Repeat for all of your Google Accounts.
Customize each profile.
Choose a profile color.
Change the name if you want.
Sync all of your data.
Add any extensions you want to use. My favorite extensions are AdBlocker, CapitalOne Shopping, SaveToPinterest, Zotero, and DuckDuckGo.
Upload the Bookmarks and Lists that you saved earlier as an HTML file to each Chrome Profile.
Delete any bookmarks that you don’t want to correspond with any respective Chrome Profiles.
Choose what happens on start-up in your settings to create a workflow.
Click on the three dots in the right upper hand corner.
At the very bottom of the drop down menu, click Settings.
On the left hand side, click On Startup.
Choose what you want to happen when you open this Chrome Profile.
I like all of my regular websites to open up on each profile. For my student profile, it’s usually Canvas, my Gmail, and Google Drive.
How to switch between profiles.
After creating multiple profiles, you can switch between them by clicking on your profile picture/name at the top right corner and selecting the desired profile from the dropdown menu.
How to manage Chrome profiles.
You can manage and remove profiles by going back to the “Manage people” section in Chrome settings. From there, you can edit profile details, remove profiles, or add more profiles as needed.
